KI#CK - Artificial Intelligence: Identifying Opportunities, Developing Competences

The two-year project KI#CK - Künstliche Intelligenz: Chancen erkennen, Kompetenzen entwickeln aims at creating a needs-oriented qualification programme for personnel working in the Life Science cluster in Schleswig-Holstein in order to provide an entry point into the highly topical subject of “Artificial Intelligence (AI)“ and its range of applications. Project partners are the Northern German cluster agency Life Science Nord, Technische Hochschule Lübeck (University of Applied Sciences TH Lübeck) and oncampus GmbH.

The use of AI is becoming increasingly important in the Life Science sector, in particular  in the area of medicine and medical technology, the latter of which is of particular relevance to Schleswig-Holstein. The various fields of possible applications hold a large economical potential for the small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) in the cluster. However, they often lack the skills and competences to identify their opportunities in order to be able to keep pace with the international developments in future, or even take the lead.

Thus, in addition to the content the KI#CK project will provide personnel with relevant conceptual and methodological skills to enable the independent development of business concepts. Experts of different fields will cooperate closely to create a diverse advanced training programme  which will be co-created, tested and further developed together with enterprises from the sector.

The project is funded by the German state of Schleswig-Holstein via its state programme „Landesprogramm Arbeit“ in combination with the European Social Funds amounting to EUR 498.000 in total.


Um KMU für dieses innovative und techniklastige Themenfeld zu interessieren und sie zu bewegen, sich eingehender mit den Potentialen von Künstlicher Intelligenz für ihre eigenen Geschäftsprozesse und Produkte auseinander zu setzen, verfolgt das Projekt einen niedrigschwelligen Ansatz, der flexibles Lernen in Online-Lernarrangements mit persönlichen Lern- und Austauschmöglichkeiten in offenen Veranstaltungsformaten verbindet. Dazu werden unterschiedliche, sich ergänzende Lernangebote entwickelt und in permanenter Abstimmung mit den Unternehmen über die Laufzeit des Projektes neu konzipiert. Letzteres ist ein entscheidender Erfolgsfaktor, um die Angebote über die Projektlaufzeit hinaus bereit zu stellen und bestehende wie aufkommende Qualifizierungsbedarfe zu decken.

Die Internationalität des Themas wird berücksichtigt, indem ein Teil der tiefergehenden Inhalte in englischer Sprache ausgearbeitet wird.

Project Goal and Activities

In order to inspire SMEs to participate in this innovative and  highly technical topic and to motivate them to deal with the potentials of Articial Intelligence in terms of their own business processes and products, the project takes a low-threshold approach combining flexible online learning with open event formats to allow for opportunities to learn, share and exchange. In addition, various complementary learning solutions will be developed over the course of the project and in permanent consultation with the SMEs also newly designed. The latter is the most important factor to ensure sutainability beyond the project term and  to cover both existing and upcoming qualification needs. 

The international aspect of this topics is considered by developing parts of the content and/or integrating content in English as well.


The KI#CK project focuses on the development, testing and evaluation of qualification modules to provide an entry point into the significant  future topic "Artificial Intelligence " (AI) and its range of applications.
The following indicators have been defined in order to measure the achievement of some of the programme objectives:

 Needs analysis within the Life Science cluster to identify topics and requests for support in terms of the subject of artificial intelligence

  • 12 to 18 months to develop tailor-made and needs-oriented qualification modules, formats and approaches to build up a qualification programme
  • 12 months to test and evaluate the online modules and class-room training courses developed to build up a sustainable and sectoral training scheme
  • Analysis of relevant AI methods and tools, eg machine-learning and knowledge-based systems as well as concrete application contexts
  • Analysis of new business models to be realised with AI and the significance of AI for existing products and business models
  • Developing new fields of activitiy for personnel and synergies for enterprises in the Life Science cluster
